Developmental Screening & Monitoring
Watching your child grow is exciting, and it’s natural to wonder if they’re developing as expected. Developmental screening is a simple way to check how your child is learning, moving, talking, and interacting as they grow.
What Is Developmental Screening?
Height and weight show how your child is growing physically, but development also includes skills like smiling, waving, talking, walking, and playing. These are called developmental milestones.
Screenings are usually short questionnaires filled out by parents or caregivers and reviewed with a professional. They are used along with regular checkups, vision, and hearing tests to help track your child’s overall development.
Why Is Screening Important?
Developmental screening helps identify concerns early, when support can make the biggest difference. A screening does not diagnose a child, but it may show if more evaluation or extra support could help.
Screening helps:
- Help parents understand their child’s development
- Find concerns early
- Connect families to helpful services
- Support healthy learning and behavior
Who and When to Screen
All children from birth to age 5 should be screened regularly. It’s never too early—especially if you have concerns. Early screening means early support.
Where Can I Get a Screening?
- Your child’s doctor: Talk with your child’s doctor about development and ask about screening tools.
- Help Me Grow Orange County: Call 1-866-476-9025 to get connected to screenings and community resources.
What Happens After Screening?
If your child is developing on track, continue regular screenings as they grow. If a concern is found, you will be guided to helpful services:
- Children under age 3 may qualify for early intervention services
- Children age 3 and older may receive free evaluations and services through their local school district
Every child develops at their own pace. Developmental screening is a supportive tool to help your child grow and to give parents confidence and peace of mind.
